To be honest, going through the Chunnel on a train was less exciting that I thought it would be. It really is just a long tunnel. You have no sense of passing under the English Channel. I suggest, when you travel from England to France, that you take a ferry from Dover. That way, you get to see the famous white cliffs of Dover.
That first picture if a trifle misleading. We didn’t actually make it that close to the Eiffel Tower on the first day. We had a long day of traveling. By the time we checked in to the hotel and went out for dinner and got my mom settled in for the night, the sun was going down. But, you know, it’s Paris, so I have lots of pictures of the Tower to burn through. HA!
My wife, Mollie and I did walk along the river Seine to where we could see the Tower.
We did get to enjoy our first sunset in the City of Lights.
This was my third time in Paris, but I did enjoy the look of wonder on my wife and daughter’s faces.
And it really is an enchanting place.
What you might not know is that the Tower is now not only lit up from the ground, but they have covered the entire thing with small lights… that flash flicker and sparkle and sometimes change colors. Every hour on the hour, between dusk and 1 am, they put on a five-minute light show.
The trick is taking lots of pictures so you are sure to get the Tower when the lights are on.
Because Paris is all about the lights… at least at night.
We will get up close and personal with the Tower in later posts. Oh yeah, we will. But we did have some other cool adventures to share.

Fabulous light photos of Paris!
C’est tres romantique! Um, voulez-vous, um, oui oui oui…
show off
Oh, you’ve made me homesick now. I do hope you had a great time: being French, I pathetically feel responsible when bloggers write less than glowing posts after visiting my country lol
you will feel the love
Where’s that, Blackpool?
wait… what? no… Paris is not in Blackpool… HA!
It’s pronounced “Blackstool”!
hey, red the post about the names of the English towns I did… I found the river Trent… It passes through Carlton-on-Trent, and Barrow upon Trent, and Newark on Trent, and Walton-on-Trent… also West Butterwick, North and South Muskham, and m personal favorite; Barton-under-Needwood.
Why is there so much stuff on Trent??? I’m starting to feel self-conscious.
I thought you might
I was in Paris as a teenager for 10 days – it was full of adventures. Amazing city – but the Eiffel Tower didn’t flash back then. 🙂 I can recall going into a little bistro and ordering a steak and watching the chef come out of the back, go out the door and after a few minutes come back in with the steak that he had just got from the butcher. Talk about tasty. Ha! And then my friend tried taking pictures of the local police and we got surrounded and informed that it was illegal to take pictures of police in France. They took our film but the officer was kind enough to give us money for replacement film. And then there was MontMartes – watching the artists and then we went to visit Versailles – mind-blowing. Ahhh, and the wine – then, the wine. Ha! Notre Dame, whew. Amazing city.
Awesome pictures Art – I loved Paris. I look forward to seeing what it looks like now through your lens. Thank You
HA… I am doing a food post next.
Num, Num, Num!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
oh yeah
There’s a point I need to make here, Art. The point of Eurostar is speed. You can go from St. Pancras to the Gare du Nord in 2 1/2 hours. That means you can do a day trip to Paris or London depending which way you are going. It is not designed to be exciting. It is designed for business travelers or locals who just want to do a jaunt for a day or two.
If you are wanting to do a ferry, the journey could be about 10 to 12 hours from London to Paris depending on traffic and whether you make the ferry on time. If you miss the ferry, sometimes it takes another two hours to wait for the next one. Because of this hassle, a lot of people just say, “Forget it,” and just transport their cars on the Eurostar anyway.
The White Cliffs of Dover are just cliffs that are white. That’s it. The song just romanticized them, Art.
I saw the cliffs on my last trip, and the drive to get there, and the castle above the town, the romance of a sea voyage, these have their place as well.
But you are also running the risk of storms where no amount of Dramamine would save you from the projectile vomiting. Romance has its place, Art, but there were reasons beaucoup pounds and francs were poured into that tunnel. Somebody has to give the other side of the story.
It is all how much of a hurry you are in, what you want to see, and how strong your stomach is.
Paris is amazing and you’re right about the ferry, always take the ferry. No fun being shut up in an underground tunnel.
it was faster
Sometimes slower is more beautiful though…
