Oh yeah… snorkeling the reefs of Maui… on our second honeymoon…
So I have some pictures of fish to share… for the next few days… Now, you might think that we had to get on some boat and go miles out in the ocean. You would be wrong. Most of the pictures were taken 30 yards offshore… right in front of our hotel…
You could see the reef from our room.
At low tide, you could see it really well. I swam with a sea turtle right there, but I didn’t have the good underwater camera that we borrowed from my wife’s sister yet, so I only have some pictures of the turtles taken with a disposable underwater camera, and I haven’t gotten them developed yet. But even this close to shore, the diversity of sea life was incredible. It was like swimming in an aquarium…
That was another of my favorite places to swim… the reef right along the lava-rock shore, located conveniently right in front of our new favorite bar.
And now, some fish…
I think that is a convict tang surgeonfish… it isn’t always easy to tell just by looking at your dive card…
That is… uh… some other kind of fish… don’t worry, I am saving the best ones for last…
And that… down there in the bottom left corner… correct me if I’m wrong… but that is also a fish…
Now there is a lot of dangerous stuff down there… besides the sharks, eels, stingrays, and devil scorpionfish… oooh… and I saw an octopus that was pretending to be a scorpion fish, but I hid and watched it come out and turn blue and purple… unfortunately I never got a good picture of it… but anyway, there are things down there that will cut you, rip you and poke you… and strong currents and waves and stuff… to push you into those sharp things…
Also, it is very easy to get a bad sunburn while you float around in the water, so I apologize to the ladies… and some of you guys… but there will not be any pictures of me without a shirt on… safety first…
I would like to identify that fish as an orangespine surgeonfish. But the tail is not exactly the same as the picture on the dive card… so it either is or it isn’t… but if it isn’t… you know the diving was awesome, if a fish like that didn’t even make the cut to get selected to be on the dive card…

You seem to know a lot about fishes. And, yes, you’re correct. That one at the bottom left corner is also a fish.
I learned about them by the immersion method… HA!
I have fallen in love with your puns.
A hola in one! HA!
It’s like you had your own private aquarium. Lots of fun!
It was and it was
What kind of fish is that in the last picture? Looks dangerous
sigh
Oh I’ve never heard of a sigh fish
That is the noise it makes with its big blow hole… ha!
makes sense. Apparently it breaths out of water, blogs and speaks English too…
Well… it sort of speaks English… I guess…
ha or crack squirrels
right
Great shots — even the fuzzy ones show how lovely the water is there. That is a convict tang, and you have one other of the same species there somewhere. I cannot wait to see more!
Yay.
What’s that fish in the mask in the last photo?
I wish I knew.
I think this may be Hawaiian Browne Artfish.
They are endangered…
I only know of one in the wild.
And it has a harpoon sticking out of its ass…
Wait, are we talking about the same fish?
yes we are…
Excellent! I believe you correctly identified all the fish. At least as fish. That one with the cool tail was pretty neat. Also very happy not to be hearing stories about how you were cut, ripped, poked, pushed into, bitten, stung, drown,or burnt to a crisp. (we had that talk before you left, about the sunburn) I am really enjoying taking your vacation with you in pictures!
Well it isn’t over yet…
How did they taste?
awesome
I love fishies! You are so funny about keeping your shirt on, oh well, our loss! 🙂 Looks like fun and so close to shore. Glad you don’t have any stories about being bitten, stung or poked by any sea life. 🙂
I came pretty close to getting hurt a few times
Very neat Art.
Thanks.
Nice underwater photos. When I went snorkeling at the Big Island a few years back, I didn’t have an underwater camera. Also, I wear glasses and I couldn’t wear them under the snorkeling mask, so bottom line, I couldn’t really see much of anything clearly. Thanks for sharing what I would have seen had I been wearing contact lenses or had decent vision.
My mustache does make it hard to get a good seal on the mask… but I managed.
