Even if you aren’t one of the people who find birds interesting, surely that picture, taken by my daughter Mollie, of a bald eagle taking flight, will make something stir inside you.
That being said, I seem to recall that Benjamin Franklin was opposed to the bald eagle being made our national bird. He said they were mostly scavengers… which is true… and that we should adopt the turkey as the feathered symbol of our nation… which would be pretty funny, if you think about it. Maybe somebody should Google fact-check me on all that.
This isn’t the end of the photos of our camping adventure, just the bird-related portion of it, just so you know.

There is a picture of me right before we got on the boat to go look for bald eagles. I know, I don’t look that excited, even though I love boats… but the thing is… and this is another thing I shouldn’t be proud of but can’t bring myself to be ashamed of either… is that I am sort of a pessimist, and a little bit of a cynic. I wasn’t going to believe we were going to see bald eagles until I saw one.

But that is also why I got so freekin’ excited when we saw four of them…

Or maybe we only saw one or two or three, and they were flying around the lake when I wasn’t looking.

However it worked out, it was pretty awesome.

You couldn’t ask for a better bird adventure.

Obviously Mollie took that picture before we spotted the first one.

I did take a few of the bald eagle pictures, but Mollie got the best ones, like this one of the moment when that majestic creature leaped off a branch and into the air. The good news is that I got to see it with my own eyes instead of through the camera viewfinder.

I know the ones of the eagle in flight look fake, but the sky really was white from that angle. They were taken into the sun, and that washed the blue right out of the sky.
Oh, we did see one more majestic bird on our camping adventure…

Oh, yeah… more on that later.

If only those Eagles’ namesake football team would play better
HA!
You’re right about Ben Franklin and the turkey. And to be honest, wild turkeys (the birds, not the beverage) are pretty cool. But they’re a 1 on a scale of 1-10, where eagles are 12s!
Your/Molly’s pictures are awesome!
I do loves me some raptors! Thanks.
Me too. Spectacular birds. They get me all John Denver-y. Though he’d be a poorer man …
ha
I kinda like the turkey idea I can imagine a large majestic turkey gracing the side of airforce 1
It would be everywhere…
mmmhmm and then we’d have to roast eagles on thanksgiving… or go back to oysters and lobsters and such
that sounds like a post to me
It will require a photo shop pro to pull it off well… I elect you
I am really swamped right now… remind me later.
mmmhmm… remind me to remind you later
remind me to… okay…
