Why do we say; happy as a clam???

Are clams happy? What does a clam have to be happy about? Or is it because the shape of their shell makes them look like they are smiling? Somebody should Google that… or ask Seri… Serie? Sery? Seary? How the heck do you spell Seery? Somebody should Google that too… or ask Searie…

I also wonder why “clam up” doesn’t mean “to get even happier”.

I’m at the coast right now. I’m not sure if the clams are happy or not. There’s a red tide so clamming is closed. So that would make them happy, right? But a red tides full of bacteria, soooooo…… I don’t think the neighborhood clams are at all happy.
